This European Standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to walk-behind trimmers, powered by a combustion engine, with cutting means using non-metallic filament line or freely pivoting non-metallic cutter(s), of which the cutting elements rely on centrifugal force to achieve cutting with the kinetic energy of a single cutting element not exceeding 10 J, designed for cutting grass or similar plant material, when they are used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer (see Clause 4). This European Standard is not applicable to: a) walk-behind trimmers with cutting means other than those described above; b) self propelled walk-behind trimmers or walk-behind edge trimmers; c) lawnmowers using non-metallic filament line or freely pivoting non-metallic cutting elements with greater than 10 J kinetic energy; NOTE 1 EN 836 applies for machines using non-metallic filament line or freely pivoting non-metallic cutting elements with greater than 10 J kinetic energy. d) motor mowers using metal or other solid cutting elements. NOTE 2 EN 12733 applies for machines using metal or other solid cutting elements. EMC and environmental hazards other than noise have not been considered in this European Standard. This European Standard is not applicable to walk-behind trimmers which are manufactured before the date of its publication as EN. NOTE 3 Lawn trimmers and lawn edge trimmers (electric powered) are dealt with in EN 786, grass trimmers (internal combustion engine powered) are dealt with in EN 11806 and lawn mowers (internal combustion engine powered) are dealt with in EN 836.

This standard specifies safety requirements and their verification for design and construction of pedestrian controlled motor mowers with rotary or reciprocating cutting blades used in agricultural, forestry and landscaping to cut and/or mulch grass or similar plants or scrub and woody vegetation. For the purposes of this standard the following types of pedestrian controlled machines are considered to be motor mowers: -- flail mowers; -- grassland mowers; -- scrub clearing machines; -- sickle bar mowers. This standard applies also to multipurpose machines when are used for cutting or mulching grass or scrub. This standard does not cover lawn mowers (see EN 836), engine driven brush cutters and grass trimmers (see EN ISO 11806) or other lawn maintenance equipment. This standard describes methods for the elimination or reduction of hazards arising from the use of motor mowers. Additionally, it specifies the type of information to be provided by the manufacturer on safe working practices. Environmental aspects have not been considered in this standard. This standard applies primarily to machines which are manufactured after the date of issue of the standard.

The guidelines for operator and bystander protection in this recommended practice apply to towed, semi-mounted or mounted flail mowers and flail power rakes when powered by a propelling tractor or machine of at least 15 kw (20 hp), intended for marketing as industrial mowing equipment and designed for cutting grass and other growth in public use areas such as parks, cemeteries and along roadways and highways. The use of the word "industrial" is not to be confused with "in-plant industrial equipment." This document does not apply to: 1) turf care equipment primarily designed for personal use, consumption or enjoyment of a consumer in or around a permanent or temporary household or residence; 2) machines designed primarily for agricultural purposes but which may be used for industrial use; and 3) self powered or self propelled mowers or mowing machines. Where other standards are referenced, such reference applies only to the document identified, not revisions thereof. Purpose--To establish guidelines for operator and bystander protection for flair movers and flair power rakes whose intended use falls within the scope of this document.

NOTE Product-specific standards such as ISO 5395 specify whether or not a certain type of machine is to be fitted with a ROPS and these can include additional information on aspects related to ROPS, e.g. seat-belt anchorages and seat belts.

The term “grass shear” within this standard means “electric powered scissors type grass shear”. So far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by grass shears which are encountered by all persons in the normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse. NOTE 101 Attention is drawn to the fact that in many countries, additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour, the national water supply authorities and similar authorities. Requirements for chargers are covered by IEC 60335-2-29. EMC and environmental aspects except for noise have not been considered in this standard.
