SAE J1717 is an advisory document suggesting minimum recommended testing, appearance evaluation, and protocol for specifying the recommendations with regard to Singular Unassembled Automotive interior trim Parts. This test method specifies the operating procedures for a controlled irradiance, xenon arc apparatus used for the accelerated exposure of various automotive interior trim components. This is a performance standard based on the test parameters of SAE J1885. Test duration as well as any exceptions to the sample preparation and performance evaluation procedures contained in this document, are covered in material specifications of the different automotive manufacturers. Equipment qualified to perform this test is determined by material test comparison between instruments approved for SAE J1885 and those intending to perform SAE J2412. A specific test protocol to compare new test equipment to those previously approved must be done by material test comparison by the contractual parties. The interested contractual companies shall identify details of the test protocol and the materials to be tested. At the time of publication of this test method, the committee is developing a 'Protocol To Verify New Test Apparatus' identified as SAE J2413. Any deviations to this test method, such as filter combinations, is to be agreed upon by contractual parties.

This SAE Standard covers the minimum mechanical properties measured on separately cast test pieces of varying thickness and microstructural requirements for ductile iron castings used in automotive and allied industries. Castings may be specified int he as-cast or heat-treated condition. If castings are heat-treated, prior approval from the customer is required. This test method measures the system material properties of an insulated formed heat shield under invehicle conditions. While the material properties of the individual components can often be determined via existing test methods, the system properties of the entire composite is typically much harder to ascertain (especially for multi-layer shields). System material properties include thermal conductivity in the lateral or in-plane (x) direction, thermal conductivity through the thickness or perpendicular (y), surface emissivity on the top and bottom sides of the shield and specific heat of the shield material. All properties are determined for the entire shielding material specimen as a composite of the entire structure. Properties are determined using a testing apparatus that allows for two-dimensional heat flow through the specimen. Due to this, the material property results from this test method may not agree with one-dimensional heat flow type testing methods, but is representative of most heat shield materials performance tested with a centralized heat source. Therefore, material property results from this test method may be more suited for multi-dimensional analytical studies. This standard sets forth the general guidelines to construct and operate the testing apparatus to acquire a satisfactory set of test data. Designs conforming to this standard are included and must not be deviated from for sensitivity reasons that will be discussed in more detail later. Test parameters that cannot be deviated from include, but are not limited to; specimen size, distance between the source and the specimen, source diameter and environmental conditions around the apparatus. This method ultimately determines the shield material properties by using the test data along with an analytical scheme, see Section 8.1. This test method will evaluate both isotropic and anisotropic insulated shielding materials. This may also include multi-layer shielding structures which include embossed/corrugated solids, porous, fibrous, granulated and coated materials.

This SAE Recommended Practice covers two levels of high strength structural low-alloy steel bars having minimum Yield Points of 345 MPa (50 ksi) and 450 MPa (65 ksi). The two strength levels are 345 and 450 MPa or 50 and 65 ksi minimum yield point. Different chemical compositions are used to achieve the specified mechanical properties. In some cases there are significant differences in chemical composition for the same strength level, depending on the fabricating requirements. It should be noted that although the mechanical properties for a steel grade sourced from different suppliers may be the same, the chemical composition may vary significantly. The fabricator should be aware that certain compositional differences may effect the forming, welding, and/or service requirements of the material. It is therefore recommended that the fabricator consult with the producer to understand the effect of chemical composition. The products within the scope of this document include bars of the following types and sizes: Rounds, squares, and hexagons of all sizes (cut length only), flats 5.2 mm (0.203 in) and greater in thickness but not greater than 150 mm (6 in) wide, and flats greater than 5.8 mm (0.229 in) thick and over 150 mm (6 in) to 204 mm (8 in) wide. This document previously covered plates, structural shapes, and bar size shapes of Grades 290A, 345A, 415A, 450A, 345W, 345F, 415F, 485F, and 550F as well as bars of Grades 290A, 415A, and 345W. These products are no longer covered; requirements for these products and grades can be found in ASTM Specifications.
